Marketers looking to target potential customers with ads on mobile platforms can take a new course from Google designed to help them get the most out of their campaigns.

The search engine's web-based training programme is available in three different versions tailored to users of its pay per click services in the US, the UK and Australia.

Miles Johnson of the Inside AdWords blog said on-the-go advertising is becoming increasingly important to brands as there are an estimated four billion mobile phone owners worldwide.

He added that, according to the Morgan Stanley Internet Trends report published in April, these devices account for half of all new online connections and by 2014, there are expected to be more people accessing the web through their phone than via a desktop computer.

"We offer a number of innovative ad formats to help you reach mobile users looking for products and services," Mr Johnson said.

Last month, Google launched a Mobile Ads Blog to help marketers keep up with the latest developments, innovations and trends in the sector.
