Companies using search engine marketing to drive traffic to their website have been advised to consider removing links.
Writing for Search Engine Watch, Gareth Owen explained some websites, although they are well-known firms, do not rank well on search engines because they have too many site-wide links.
Because of this, their link profile is "completely unnatural", he stated.
To improve their position, companies are advised to ensure the only links coming into their site are URLs from highly relevant domains.
This means marketing firms must "consider not just how to build quality links for clients but how to actively manage the link profile and ensure that the right links are being built", Mr Owen continued.
He said this presents a challenge, because some firms have their link building strategies well-ingrained.
