Speaking to Business Insider, Guillaume Bouchard noted that it can take a while for SEO to start showing results.
He warned that companies that do not pay constant attention to the strategies could find "years of effort" are lost in a very short space of time.
The expert noted that once an organisation using online marketing services to work on their SEO has established a strong presence, it is still hard to preserve positions in search engine rankings.
Mr Bouchard observed that events such as a website re-launch or major IT change could contribute to a loss of momentum.
This comes after SEO expert David Peiris said in an Econsultancy Digital Marketing blog that SEO needs to be factored into website design from the very beginning.
