If the search engine optimisation (SEO) industry does not do more to aid small businesses it may find that it is "doomed to irrelevance", one expert has suggested.
In an article for Search Engine Land, SEO expert and advisor Matt McGee states that although some people believe that there is very little money in the small business sector, it is destined to become increasingly important for a number of reasons.
Firstly, he notes that larger companies are increasingly opting for in-house SEO departments or specialists due to more emphasis on the benefits of search marketing in the private sector.
Mr McGee also reports that due to the level of bad online information about how best to mount an SEO campaign, many small companies will end up attempting to do the work themselves – leaving specialists out of pocket and SEO with a bad name.
"We need small businesses to understand what we do and to succeed when we do it for them, for our own benefit as much as theirs," he concludes.
