Customised search services based on Yahoo! technology can now be created by individuals and organisations following the launch of a new platform.

Yahoo! revealed today (July 10th) that users of its beta Build Your Own Search Service (BOSS) initiative can create tailored search facilities with control over how listings are ranked and displayed.

Prabhakar Raghavan, chief strategist at Yahoo! Search, said in an official statement that the new platform was created with a view to allowing more parties to get involved with innovating in the search sector.

Separately, he told CNET "We fully expect it to expand the footprint of Yahoo! search advertising on the web."

Mr Raghavan also said that those who build successful services with the BOSS platform will be required to display search ads.

Meanwhile, Yahoo!’s search engine marketing deal with Google is to be examined by the US department of justice, it recently emerged.

The agreement, if allowed to go ahead, will see Google ads displayed next to Yahoo!’s organic search listings.
