A new addition to social network Twitter could help marketers to raise the profile of their website and get their content to a wider audience.

Writing on the official Twitter blog, Carolyn Penner said the Tweet button will make it easier for users to share content from the page they are on without having to copy and paste, shorten links or switch between browser tabs, which could provide a valuable word-of-mouth boost for online marketing services.

"When you click on the Tweet button, a Tweet box will appear pre-populated with a shortened link that points to the item that you're sharing," she wrote.

Once the content has been posted to Twitter, the website visited by the user will make recommendations for other accounts to follow, which could include the company or writer of the original article.

Furthermore, publishers of all sizes from "recreational bloggers to large media companies" can quickly add the button to their sites as it only requires a few lines of code, Ms Penner noted.

Among the organisations that have already added the button to their sites are CNN, Hulu, the Onion, USA Today and YouTube.

According to recent figures from comScore, 93 million people visited Twitter in June, up 109 per cent on a year earlier.
