A new mobile Wi-Fi service is to be launched by telephone network 3 in time for Christmas 2009.

Wherever access to the 3 network is available, customers will be able to use the Wi-Fi connection on several devices via a small wireless modem.

The modem, smaller than an average mobile phone, enables people to connect to the internet on different appliances at the same time. Although no software installation is required, an eight-digit network key will need to be input once for every new gadget the user wants to connect to.

Sales and marketing director with 3 Marc Allera remarked upon the number of Wi-Fi devices that only exist in fixed locations.

"Consumer demand for easy and affordable internet access on the go is growing fast and we’re responding to that by announcing the UK’s first wireless modem," he said.

The company recently furthered its internet marketing service strategies through offering free Skype on the Nokia N97 and other handsets in its range.
