Retailers offering goods online believe that pay per click services are most effective when advertising on the web, a new survey shows.

According to the survey, by Practical eCommerce, 79.3 per cent of e-retailers think pay per click advertising is an effective way to boost sales.

Furthermore, some 27.6 per cent said they thought it was "very effective".

The research shows that 85.7 per cent of online retail firms have invested in pay per click services, compared to 44 per cent who have bought banner advertising.

One survey respondent from California said advertising is important for e-commerce companies.

"We focus online because that’s where our customers are," he stated.

According to the survey, 37.5 per cent of online retailers have spent money on rich media ads, while 36 per cent have invested in online video.

A recent report by European Union (EU) consumer commissioner Meglena Kuneva revealed that 33 per cent of consumers across EU member states bought at least one item over the internet in 2008.

This figure rose to more than 50 per cent in countries such as the UK, France and Germany.
