Social networking has more to offer internet marketing than just the two main players, one expert has suggested.
The Social Media Portal (SMP) said this week that although Facebook and Myspace dominate the headlines as market leaders in social networking and new online advertising possibilities, there are a number of niche sites to be taken advantage of.
Tim Gibbon of SMP said that despite apparent monopolies from sites such as YouTube and eBay social networking is growing across a number of fields – offering online marketing opportunities for all.
"There are lots of niche sites as well now which seem to be making headway, such as Sagazone which is a site for so-called ‘silver surfers’, whose users will be older," he said.
He added that these more targeted sites could continue to expand and that the level of competition in the marketplace was comparable to that of the big four search engines.
"They’re fighting for the same audience and they’ve all got advertising and viral marketing so we’re seeing what they can do to compete for it," he concluded.
The Guardian recently reported that Myspace is to increase its television content, which could draw further advertising opportunities.
