Internet marketers and businesses considering the benefits of online advertising were given a boost this week as a new study revealed that more and more people are turning to the internet to shop for a range of products and services.

According to the latest Nielsen Global Online Survey which considered the global habits of internet shoppers, over 85 per cent of those people with internet access have now made some form of online purchase.

It was noted that the figure has increased by an estimated 40 per cent within the last two years and that this equates to big business for online marketers and company’s considering embarking on search engine optimisation campaigns.

The survey also revealed that across the globe over half of internet users said that they had completed an online purchase within the past month, and this is something that Jonathan Carson, Nielsen Online’s international president, claims is indicative of a major shift in global culture.

Mr Carson said that online shopping and general internet use was no longer the domain of a number of tech-savvy consumers and said that the internet was now a mass market commodity that has grown from being a niche technology into a vital element of modern life.

He said that there is now no area of life that has not been touched by online media and said that consumers would continue to flock to the internet as a form of convenient shopping and entertainment.

It was found that South Korea was found to have the largest ratio of internet users who used the web to shop at 99 per cent. However this was closely followed by 97 per cent in the UK, Germany and Japan.

Companies who may currently be sitting on the fence as to whether to take advantage of the number of online retail opportunities and the benefits of internet marketing campaigns and search engine optimisation may find the news enough to convince them to proceed with their projects.
