Google is reported to be "actively considering" the introduction of "richer format" adverts for its websites.

The move could see the company begin to introduce image and video adverts into the sponsored link part of its search results.

Citing Media Post, Search Engine Land notes that Google is "proceeding cautiously" with the development of the move, which could affect search engine marketing.

Although the company alluded to the development earlier in the year, announcements made by company representatives at the Citigroup Technology Conference held in New York last week marked a step forward in the development of this search engine marketing technique, Search Engine Land suggests.

Commenting on the possibility of such a development earlier in the year, Google spokesperson Marissa Mayer suggested searching adverts required the same technological advances as searching the web and images.

In related news, Google’s custom search engine facilities are apparently continuing to ‘raise the bar’ in the vertical search engine market, Media Post reports.
