Increasing numbers of small businesses are becoming aware of the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO), according to one expert.

A spokesman for said that more small business clients have expressed an interest in improving their search engine rankings this year than ever before.

John Eberhard, president of, claims that submission of articles to article directories is a good way of improving SEO.

"I do not tell people to just put up quality content and that people will find them. Maybe that works for Microsoft and Coca-Cola, but it never works for a small business site," he said.

"Article directory submissions are a proactive thing that a business owner can do to take control of their search engine rankings."

According to a statement from the company the web currently hosts over 1,000 article directories, most of which hold 100,000 or more articles and utilising these can be a useful way of increasing search rankings.

Last week Karan Singh told industry website Promotion World that web users should look at on-page content before embarking on a full SEO project.
