UK firms may want to review their search engine optimisation strategies following a new report showing that online search is the most popular web activity in the UK.

According to TNS Global Interactive’s Digital World, Digital Life study, eight in ten of the UK adults polled said they had made an online search query in the last month.

The research also discovered that Britons spend an average of 28 per cent of their overall leisure time on the internet, with each respondent having about 5.2 hours of such time available every weekday.

Online banking, news consumption and paying bills were some of the other common internet-based activities undertaken by British web users.

"By spending productive time online, we’re actually making more time for leisure. With more social and entertainment activities available online, it’s also easy to understand why our lives are becoming more digital," stated managing director of TNS Global Interactive Arno Hummerston.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 49 per cent of US web users utilise online search on a typical day.
