Google’s latest Zeitgeist list has revealed that UK web users searched for Facebook the most this year.
Other popular searches included those for the BBC, YouTube and eBay. The BBC’s iPlayer, Facebook, the iPhone and YouTube topped the list of the fastest rising search queries, while Icesave was the most searched-for finance term.
Elsewhere, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Barack Obama led the way in terms of searches for individual politicians, according to Google.
"From BBC’s iPlayer to Facebook to YouTube, many of the top searches in Britain this year have been for our favourite websites," said the search engine.
Globally, Sarah Palin, the Beijing Olympics, Heath Ledger and Euro 2008 were among the most popular overall search terms, search engine optimisation professionals may be interested to note.
A number of search engines have also released their lists of the most popular searches of 2008, including Yahoo!, Ask.com and AOL.
