The internet marketing opportunities presented by Facebook have been highlighted in a new report which shows that the social networking site is the most heavily used web brand in the UK.
According to the data, compiled by Nielsen Online, Facebook accounts for 13 per cent of all UK internet time, or one in every eight minutes spent online.
The data shows that the website recorded 3.8 billion more minutes of usage in April this year than in did in the same month the year before.
For internet marketers, this means that advertising on Facebook – through display ads, banner ads or sponsored gifts, for example – could have significant benefits in terms of reaching potential new customers.
Other web brands appearing in the top ten include MSN/Windows Live, Google, eBay, Yahoo! and the AOL Media Network.
Research carried out recently by the Internet Advertising Bureau revealed that the vast majority of social networking users would prefer to use a free site containing advertising than pay to be a member of a site without ads.
