Computational knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha has gone live, offering users an alternative way to search for information.

Unlike other search engines such as Google, the website aims to provide direct answers to questions posed by visitors.

Instead of returning results pages featuring links to other websites, Wolfram Alpha displays information and facts gathered via its internal knowledge base.

In terms of internet marketing, the search engine states that at present, it is focusing on major corporate sponsorships.

However, it adds: "In the future, there may be opportunities for more targeted advertising."

Wolfram Alpha points out that it is still in the early stages of what is a long-term project and reminds users that it is still working on some "kinks".

Last month, a white paper produced by Google concluded that the Google Content Network is the world’s top network for internet marketing, reaching more than 80 per cent of global web users.
