Internet marketing services providers looking to expand their social media operations next year may be interested in the views of one expert, who has offered his opinions on the trends the sector is likely to see.

Writing for Search Engine Land, Ciaran Norris stated: "2011 will see a continuing convergence between devices, channels and sectors as TV, mobile and search all become increasingly social."

He said many companies may be asking whether they can afford not to get involved in the market as sites such as Facebook and Twitter continue to expand.

Mr Norris expects to see this continued growth on Facebook, which he predicts will hit the landmark of 1 billion users within the next twelve months, partially due to a surge in the popularity of mobile internet-enabled smartphones that will allow people to access the service wherever and whenever they like.

It was also recently stated by Dan Oliver, editor-in-chief of .net magazine, that many firms would continue to experiment with social marketing in 2011 as there is not yet any clear idea of what the best practices are for the medium.
