Internet marketing services providers looking to expand their social media activities may be interested in the view of one expert, who has stated that overuse of the medium is making people "less human".

In her new book Alone Together, Professor Sherry Turkle of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology described sites such as Facebook and Twitter as a modern form of madness.

She suggests over-reliance on technology, while giving the illusion of allowing for better communication, can in fact leave people isolated from reality and engaging in behaviours that can be considered pathological.

“We have invented inspiring and enhancing technologies, yet we have allowed them to diminish us," the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Recently, it was announced by Twitter's chief executive officer Dick Costolo that use of the site from mobile devices has seen large growth in the past year.

He told reporters at this month's consumer Electronics Show that 40 per cent of posts are now made from mobile phones.
