LinkedIn has now reached the 200 million member milestone.
The social networking site has continued to prove popular with professionals users – in spite of competition from other popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
One of the main reasons for LinkedIn’s popularity is that it offers users the potential to headhunt on a transglobal scale. Furthermore, Internet marketing content can be sent directly to the inboxes of some of the world’s most prestigious and connected CEOs.
However, the figure from LinkedIn only represents registered users, as opposed to active monthly users: by contrast the active monthly figures from the platforms main rivals include Facebook’s 1.01 billion users, Twitter’s 200 million and Google+ which claims to have around 135 million.
The U.S. has the most LinkedIn members with over 74 million using the platform, India is second with 18 million accounts while the UK is joint third alongside Brazil with 11 million users.
Turkey, Columbia and Indonesia have been ranked as the fastest growing nations using the platform.
Unsurprisingly, the IT industry has top ranking in terms of type of business using the professional social network, with some four million registered users.
However, other industries that top the charts in terms of registered users include, the financial service sector with 2.03 million users, higher education with 1.95 million users and the computer software industry with 1.65 million users.
The most followed LinkedIn profiles include, Richard Branson, Barack Obama and Deepak Chopra MD.
Current LinkedIn CEO, Jeff Weiner is number five in the top followed profiles.
Created by Reid Hoffman, the social networking platform originally launched in 2003, hitting the 50 million user milestone in October 2009 and the 100 million member milestone back in March 2011.
