Russia’s largest internet company Yandex has launched an experimental global site for testing new search algorithms.

Yandex.com will provide results from more than four billion pages based on the Latin alphabet, most of which will be in English.

Results are currently limited to text, but the company said that it aims to expand its search engine to include multimedia and answers to the most popular user queries in languages other than Russian.

In a separate move that might be of interest to firms employing search engine marketing, Yandex has also introduced a new feature allowing people using its Yandex.ru portal to filter their results to only include foreign websites.

The company said that it will also offer separate local pages when queries include the brand names of certain gadgets as users searching for these terms are often looking to buy the product locally or read feedback from existing customers.

Yandex’s sites currently attract around 19 million unique visitors a month from countries including Russia and Ukraine.
