A study by comScore for Search Engine Land has shown that Google controls a 59.8 per cent share of the US search market, while Yahoo’s share has fallen to 21.3 per cent.
Other search engines to have a share of the market were Microsoft with 9.4 per cent, AOL with 4.8 per cent and Ask with 4.7 per cent.
Although Yahoo! and Microsoft lost a percentage share of the market, the actual number of searches carried out using these search engines increased, the data shows. However, the number of searches on Google increased by more, meaning that its share of the market continued to grow.
Indeed Search Engine Land points out it is important to remember that although a percentage drop in the market may be noted, the raw number of searches may have increased, so therefore the firms may be continuing to grow – something which may be useful for search engine marketing professionals to bear in mind.
