Google has taken steps to shed light on the experiments it runs to improve the user search experience.

A post on the Official Google Blog by distinguished engineer Ben Gomes explains some of the tests the search engine carries out, with these ranging from adding white space to results pages to make top-placed listings stand out to bigger experiments.

He gave the example of a new feature allowing users to comment on and re-rank search results, an experiment that is very much in its early stages.

"At this point, I can’t say what we expect from this feature; we’re just curious to see how it will be used," Mr Gomes stated.

He added that the search engine carries out up to 200 experiments on different Google sites around the world at any given time.

Google recently added its Suggest tool – which provides suggestions on query variations for web users as they type in terms – to its homepage.
