A new watchdog has been set up to advise consumers about search engine optimisation (SEO) companies.

SEO Watchdog is the first customer reporting and quality assurance verification service for the industry, with the organisation promising facts about providers will be given impartially.

Labelling itself as "the scam buster of the internet marketing business", owner and SEO expert Charles Preston said that "inexperienced or unscrupulous companies are running rampant".

He continued: "We require some kind of proof from the consumer making the report that clearly shows that they did … have a working relationship with the SEO provider they are reporting."

Mr Preston added that feedback can be positive or negative.

In other news, Google has launched an SEO guide.

The product is set to help webmasters achieve better search engine rankings, with areas covered including the improvement of title and description meta tags, site navigation, URL structure, anchor text and content creation.
