Google is the search engine most European web users turn to when searching the internet from their mobile phones.

This is according to Opera, whose latest State of the Mobile Web report also revealed that Google was the most popular UK mobile website this year in the UK.

Search engine optimisation experts may want to take note of these trends when reviewing their mobile campaigns.

The report also revealed that Facebook and Yahoo! were the second and third most visited mobile sites in the UK in 2008, while total mobile page views made via the Opera Mini mobile browser rose by 94.1 per cent over the course of the year.

Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera, remarked: "The numbers are clear: the mobile web is growing around the world, even in countries where broadband penetration is high."

Google recently announced that users of the Apple iPhone and handsets running on the Android operating system can now view search results that have been specially optimised for their devices.
