More could be done by the relevant advertisers to seize paid search opportunities for Bollywood-related search terms, according to Hitwise.

The research company’s latest statistics showed that UK queries for Bollywood movie stars surged by 68 per cent last week, which actors such as Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan coming out on top out of the most popular 100 names compiled by Hitwise.

However, few conversions took place via ads placed with pay per click services, with paid search accounting for 0.2 per cent of clicks – suggesting that there may be sizeable opportunities for marketers in this area.

"Almost no one is bidding on these high-volume terms," Robin Goad, research director of Hitwise, commented in a blog post.

According to statistics from Google’s 2008 Zeitgeist, Indian web users conducted the most celebrity web searches for Katrina Kaif last year compared with queries for other stars in the country.
