Facebook’s launch of personalised usernames saw the site rocket to its busiest ever day for UK internet traffic on June 14th, with the site reportedly picking up 5.17 per cent of all page visits.
Robin Goad wrote on the Hitwise analyst weblog that the figures equate to around 1 in every 19 page views for the day.
The boom lifted Facebook’s visitor numbers by 9.5 per cent higher compared to the previous Sunday, leaving it second only to Google UK in terms of overall traffic, users of online marketing services may be interested to hear.
In the social network sector, Facebook accounted for 43.32 per cent of all visits – 2.5 times higher than the visitor numbers for runner-up YouTube.
The username capability allows Facebook subscribers to replace the randomly assigned ID number on their page’s URL with their personal handle.
According to the site, around 200,000 username URLs were registered within three minutes of the service being launched.
