Yahoo! has scored a victory with football fans during the recent World Cup finals, with comScore ranking it as the top choice for tournament coverage among US internet users for three straight weeks.

Writing on the Yahoo! Search Marketing Blog, Chris Marlowe said the company had pulled in the visitors with its combination of exclusive content from LA Galaxy star and former England captain David Beckham, its World Cup Toolbar and online games including fantasy football and a penalty shootout challenge.

In news that may be of interest to users of internet marketing services, comScore also ranked the Yahoo! Network as the top ad network during June.

The company also claimed the number one position for entertainment news sites, with its omg! Portal bringing in more than 25 million visitors during the month, while Yahoo! Finance retained its spot as the "undisputed leader" in its category, Mr Marlowe said.

Earlier this week, comScore said Yahoo! sites handled 3.1 billion searches from US internet users in June, putting it ahead of Microsoft but behind Google, which dealt with 10.2 billion queries.
