Online spending in the US reached $32.9 billion (£20.9 billion) during the second quarter of the year, according to new figures.

Data from comScore shows expenditure between April and June was up nine per cent year-on-year.

In some good news for users of internet marketing services, the company said this marked the third consecutive quarter of positive annual growth after a year of flat or negative performance.

The most popular types of product among online shoppers included consumer electronics excluding PC peripherals; computer software except PC games; computers, accessories and PDAs; and books and magazines.

Commenting on the figures, comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said: “The second quarter’s continuation of the first quarter’s strong retail ecommerce growth rates is encouraging.”

According to previous research by the firm, American internet users carried out 16.4 billion searches from home, work or university locations in June.

Google handled around 62.6 per cent of these queries.
