Firms working on search engine optimisation strategies have been advised not to resort to bombarding forums with links in an attempt to improve their return on investment (ROI).
Writing for Search Engine Watch, Eric Enge noted this can often be a successful method of promotion because if comments are left on 10,000 blogs and 100 links get back to the site, a greater ROI is achieved.
However, the commentator pointed out using a bot to do this "definitely isn't playing nice in the community".
As a result, Mr Enge recommended firms ensure thoughtful comments are left on forums by humans who have built up a profile history.
Once this has been done, a message can then be included that includes a link back to the website the user is aiming to promote.
Writing for the same publication, Kristi Hines said it is important for link-builders to be aware of websites that may be infected with a virus.
