Google has emerged as the most-frequently used search engine in the US in new market figures released by Nielsen//NetRatings.

In a month that saw Google acquire the services of ad network DoubleClick as it consolidated its position in the search engine marketing sector, Google took the majority share (55 per cent) of all searches conducted in the US.

With an estimated 3.77 billion searches hosted by Google, the search engine has enjoyed a year-on-year growth of 42.1 per cent.

Following the Mountain View-based firm in Nielsen//NetRatings monthly rankings were Yahoo! (21.9 per cent), MSN Windows Live (nine per cent), AOL (5.4 per cent) and (1.8 per cent).

The only companies to see a decline in their market share compared to April 2005 were (-2.3 per cent), EarthLink (-0.2 per cent) and My Way (-81 per cent).

Recently, the Internet Advertising Bureau called for greater transparency in the procedures of Nielsen//Netratings and fellow internet measurement company comScore.
