Website marketing services firms witnessed Microsoft's search engine Bing experience a 7.6 per cent rise in unique visitors from the US in February compared with the preceding month.

It made gains on leader Google, which saw a drop of 0.7 per cent, taking the number of unique visitors down to 142 million.

Commenting on the results, Stephen Chapman said in a ZDnet blog entry: "We may well start paying more attention to Bing as search engine optimisers in the not-so-distant future.

"I've maintained time-and-time again that Bing only continues to better itself."

Those providing website marketing services might be considering focusing more attention on optimising advertising offerings for Bing powered search engines in light of the fact that they increased their market share to 30.8 per cent.

This represented a rise of 0.8 percentage points compared with January.

Earlier this month, research conducted by StatCounter found that Bing overtook Yahoo! as the second most popular search provider.
