Yahoo! has previewed plans for its new Widget Channel, an initiative that uses consumer electronics devices and Intel Architecture.

The Widget Channel will allow viewers to enjoy internet applications designed for the TV whilst watching their favourite TV programs.

It will also allow consumers to write TV applications for the platform and provide them with Yahoo!-branded TV widgets.

The widgets will mean that viewers can engage in a number of different experiences, such as watching videos, tracking their favourite sports teams or staying on top of the latest news.

TV widgets can also be used to focus on popular internet services, such as Blockbuster, eBay, Yahoo! Sports and Yahoo! Finance.

"TV will fundamentally change how we talk about, imagine and experience the internet," said Eric Kim, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the company’s digital home group.

"Our close work has produced an exciting application framework upon which the industry can collaborate, innovate and differentiate," he added.

This follows news that internet marketing firms advertising on Yahoo! could see their keyword costs rise by 22 per cent on average if an advertising deal with Google goes ahead.
