US-based search engine Yahoo has signed an agreement with an Arabic company in order to reach new customers.
According to Yahoo’s chief executive officer Carol Bartz, the absorption of Maktoob.com – an online community with over 16.5 million users – is part of the search engine’s plans to expand in emerging markets and become the portal of choice for surfers and online marketing services in the area.
"With the acquisition of Maktoob.com and our investment in the region, the Arab world will soon get a Yahoo experience in Arabic with relevant local language content, programming and services," she said.
The new deal is further evidence of Yahoo’s intentions to promote its global business and the company’s Emerging Markets group has also worked in areas such as south-east Asia, India and Latin America, helping to fuel internet adoption in the region.
Yahoo recently launched a new site – Yahoo Deals – designed to help shoppers find bargains during the recession.
